Plant Use For Any Landscape

There are many uses for plants that exist in the world today. Whether it is for food, oxygen, energy or for beautifying a landscape, they serve a multitude of functions.

Plants are broken down into two systems. The first is the root system, which is mainly underground. The main functions of the root system are to keep the plant firmly in the ground by anchoring it to the soil, to absorb water and nutrients and for food storage.

The other system is above the ground. This system is involved in keeping the plant standing above the soil, and is used for both photosynthesis and for food and water dispersal.

No matter what type of landscape it is located on, the main functions of the plant are the same.

As a food, they serve both the human and animal population. Certain flowers and shrubs are edible to humans, and others allow animals to get the nutrients they need to survive.

They also create oxygen through the process of photosynthesis. In this process, plants take in energy, carbon dioxide and water and minerals, in order to give off water and oxygen.

One of the most popular uses however, is for decoration. Whether it is for landscaping design or to add some color to a room, plants are a unique way to make a home or office look different.

In addition to their many different uses, there are also three types of plants which are determined based on the its life cycle. The three types are annual, biennial and perennial.

Annual plants go through their entire life cycle in a single growing season. Biennial plants need two years to go through their life cycle. Perennial plants exist throughout growing seasons, typically with the portion of the plant above the soil dying every winter and blooming again in the spring.

The type of soil a plant exists in is also important. There are many natural soil options such as loam, clay or silt soil, typically varying depending on their consistency and the ability. Another option for plant soil is mulch.

Mulch keeps plants healthy by conserving moisture. Mulch also eliminates the need to landscape around different plants and shrubs.

Despite how a plant is used or what soil it lives in, plants serve many different uses in society. Whether it is used for food, oxygen and energy, or decorating a landscape, there are thousands of plant types that exist that can be used for all of these functions.

Landscape Lighting – 3 Reasons to Go Solar

Now that the weather has improved, you are finally able pay attention to the condition of the outside of your home. You find that your property would benefit from more light. There are several ways to go about solving your lighting problem and you should weigh the options. If you have special trees or plantings that you would like to highlight then spotlights will do the job. You can get spotlights that are bright white, ones that rotate through a color spectrum, and others that freeze on one color.

You have walkways to your front and back doors that you want to light. Small pathway or rock lights will solve this problem. Perhaps you are decorating for a party and want to brighten up your garden. You can use string lights, hanging lanterns, garden stakes and statuary.

Solar landscape lighting has become popular over the past five years. Solar lighting, decorative and functional, has several benefits over its electric counterpart:

1. Convenient – Solar lights do not need to be placed near an electrical source. So, if you need pathway lights that travel 200 feet down your driveway, you can put solar lights as far away from the house as you choose without worrying about extra wiring. Some are sold individually and others are sold in multiples, connected by a cable. This type of lighting needs to be pushed into the ground and positioned to your liking.

2. Low Maintenance – Batteries are rechargeable. You will not worry about the batteries dying in a solar light because they are constantly being recharged by the sun’s energy. This is not to say that the batteries last forever, you are likely to get two years out of a pair of rechargeable batteries. Solar lights turn on and off automatically. Many, however, have an on/off switch so when you are not home for an extended time, it is best to save the batteries and switch to the off position.

3. Attractive – There are many decorative options. Solar butterfly string lights will draw attention to the boxwoods next to your patio, while solar mission lanterns will give the needed light around your dining table on the deck. Solar wall lights will make your deck stairs safer by being well-marked. Solar floating lights decorate your pool while constantly changing color, and solar garden stakes mark your plantings and make the garden more beautiful.

While electric lights may have more powerful voltage options, they are also labor-intensive to install and add to your monthly electric bill. Solar lights are inexpensive, easy to install and cost nothing to operate.

Suggestions to Achieve a Wonderful Landscape Design

You have decided that it’s high time you did something for your backyard. For many years now, it has been bare, save for a few of your kids’ toys and playground pieces. Even with the kids’ stuff on the lawn, there is still a considerably large space that seems in desperate need of some sprucing up. In as much as decorating a backyard can be a lot of fun; the whole idea seems rather taxing. You may be overflowing with creative juices and you can’t wait to bring your ideas into fruition. But even so, you have to admit that you still would need the help of a professional landscape designer.

Finding a capable landscape artist is very easy. All you need to do is ask around or look up listings posted on the Internet. The former is a better choice though because by asking around, you are in effect getting firsthand information about the service provider. If you have a very good artist who is open to suggestions, converting that plain area in your backyard into a wonderful backdrop would be a breeze. However, to help get the ball rolling, here are a few suggestions you may want to refer to as you cook up wonderful design ideas to maximize the space of your backyard:

• Ensure that your landscaping artist would make use of the right plants. Before anything else, you and the provider must first agree on the type of plants and landscaping shrubs that will be used in the design. Perhaps it would be best if you looked over some landscape design pictures posted on the Internet just so you’ll have a general idea which plants, flowers and shrubs look good when grouped together.

• Build or place a gazebo in the midst of your backyard. If the design ideas presented by your landscape artist are not too intricate or if you prefer a minimalist approach with regards to plant groupings, having a gazebo built in the middle of your backyard is the wisest course of action. With a gazebo right-smack at the center of your lawn, the artist can strategically place his landscape design along the sides of the gazebo, thereby enhancing the beauty of the gazebo. It’s up to you if you want to place furniture inside the gazebo like a wicker chair or a chaise lounge.

• Add an element of water to your landscape design. How do you achieve this? You can always have a swimming pool built in your background. But if the space is barely enough to accommodate the landscape and a few design elements, you may just opt to have a man-made pond, a koi pond to be exact, built amidst the actual landscape.

These are just some of the things you can ask a qualified landscape designer to do to your backyard in order to maximize the space there.
